Explore the Batavia wrecksite as a 3D hologram!
Move your hand over the sensor to navigate on screen (you don’t need to touch anything).
This holographic screen shows 3D models of the site from the 1970s and 2019. They were made by combining hundreds of individual photos, using a process called photogrammetry.
-
Spot the differences between the two models.

Can you see any objects from the ship?
New technologies let us use old (and current) photographs in exciting new ways, and enable researchers to study how sites have changed.
The holographic screen is made by Looking Glass Factory Inc. It uses light field information (the angle, direction, colour and brightness of all light rays photographed) and volumetric data (stacking a series of 2D slices to form a 3D object) to create 45 distinct views of a scene. It’s cool!
